Diabetic Alert Dog Frankie

Diabetic Alert Dog Frankie

Low Blood Sugar!! You have low blood sugar and could have a seizure!  Get help now!

Sounds like a nifty high-tech invention for a diabetic?  This alert system never needs his battery charged and snuggles with you on the couch as only a loving companion animal could.

His name is Frankie, a male, black and white Border Collie mix who was rescued from a Sacramento shelter at four months, and placed into the Diabetic Alert Dog program at Lucky Bark in Rancho Cordova, California.

Yes, you read that right.  As prolific writer Henry Beston put it, “… the animal shall not be measured by man… gifted with extensions of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we never hear.”

Dogs are trained to first detect and then alert their human companion of drop in blood sugar.  Jeannette (Frankie’s beaming trainer at Local Bark) explained that dogs already have the innate ability to detect the scent.  So the training focuses on the dogs telling us what they already know.

A new canine student is first taught to alert by barking or pawing when he or she detects the scent of low blood sugar (a swab of saliva placed on a tin).  The trainer then asks the dog to pick the scent out of a lineup in a wheel of other scents, and follow the recognition with an alert (pawing or barking).  The wheel is eventually replaced by a human.  When the dog paws to alert the human of a change in blood sugar levels, he is ready to embark on his important path of service to diabetic companions.

Frankie has passed his training with flying colors and will alert someone even if the human is sleeping, walking or sitting in a chair.

BUT… Frankie began limping and was diagnosed recently of a degenerative condition called Osteochondritis Dissecans (OCD) in both shoulders.

The GOOD NEWS is that after an orthopedic surgery, his condition will be repaired and Frankie will be living a charitable life as a service dog to a diabetic owner.

The Fundraiser for Frankie at Local Bark last week raised some of the money for the surgery and here’s where your help could make a big difference.  We had the pleasure of meeting this wonderfully effusive and loving soul Frankie and hearts around the community are gushing with support.
